Gabriel Landeskog skated in just 51 games for the Colorado Avalanche during the 2021-22 season posting 30 goals and 59 points. He missed the entire season this year as he attempted to work his way through a significant injury. Well, unfortunately for the Avs, the news went from bad to worse for the team and their captain as the Avs announced today that Landeskog will miss the entire upcoming season following a cartilage transplant in his right knee. The surgery will take place on May 10th and is expected to sideline him until the 2024/2025 campaign.

Landeskog captained the Avalanche to their first Stanley Cup since 2001 last year, but the Avs came up short in their quest for defending it as they fell to the Seattle Kraken in the first round this year. This season was Landeskog's second year of his 8-year deal he signed in July of 2021 that will see him earn an average of $7M per season through the 2028-29 season.

The silver lining for the Avs for the next season is that they know they can overspend on the cap by at least that amount. How they use that money next season is still yet to be determined, but it should help them fill a few holes throughout their lineup without the 30-year-old - though I'm sure they'd much rather have their captain in the lineup if they had the option.
