Ilya Mikheyev finds a new home with another Canadian team
When reports first came out that Ilya Mikheyev's next contract would land somewhere in the 4.5 to 5 million dollar range, we knew that he wouldn't be re-joining the Maple Leafs for next season. Mikheyev was a solid player in Toronto from the start, but dealt with multiple injuries and a lack of finishing talent.
Today the Vancouver Canucks signed Mikheyev as a UFA. A 4 year contract carrying a 4.75 million dollar cap hit. Mikheyev is coming off a career year, 21 goals, 11 assists for 32 points. His value, however is his speed and penalty killing ability. Mikheyev potted 4 shorthanded goals for the Leafs this past season, but seemed to get himself at least one breakaway a game while on the PK.
The Leafs will miss Mikheyev on their PK, but the AAV on this deal is simply too high for a player who has never played a full NHL season and never even hit the 40 point mark in the NHL. Still, he was a solid player for the Leafs, and will be missed. Best of luck in Vancouver Soup!
