During the summer, Nylander was reportedly seeking an 8-year deal worth $10M per season while the Leafs were more comfortable with an annual salary below $9M. At the time, many believed Nylander was asking for far too much for various reasons. As we are now 17 games into the season, it appears the Leafs should have jumped at his initial ask.
Prior to the season, Nylander said he was willing to negotiate in-season as long as he didn't hear anything until a deal was done. The Leafs and his agent, Lewis Gross, have been having conversations recently according to reports, which is the good news. The bad news is that Nylander's play has been on a whole new level this season and that $10M ask may have gone up.
The Fourth Period's Dave Pagnotta took to social media this morning, just after Nylander had recorded his 5th point in the last two games, having dominated the Global Series in Sweden in front of his family and friends. With how Nylander has started the season and how dominant he was in Sweden, Treliving needs to work overtime to get a deal done sooner than later to avoid the ask going up any more than it has.
This morning, Nylander tied Connor McDavid's point streak among active players today with a goal and an assist in the Leafs' 4-3 overtime win over the Minnesota Wild. His 17-game point steak to begin the season is a Leafs franchise record and through those 17 games, he has 27 points and 12 goals. Nylander will look to continue his ridiculous start on Friday when the Leafs take on Connor Bedard and the Chicago Blackhawks in Chicago.
