It's funny to think that a year in which Auston Matthews scored 40 goals, he had an uncharacteristic "down year". After all, not many players reach the 40-goal plateau, let alone the 50-goal or 60-goal plateau. At any rate, nobody was overly impressed with the season that Matthews had put together in 2022-23. We were also concerned about his health status all year. Simply put, he didn't quite look himself this year.

Matthews missed a few different stretches for various reasons, but the biggest concern was about his surgically repaired wrist. For one reason or another, it just didn't look like Matthews was shooting the way we know he can. He also dealt with knee and back/oblique issues this season.

On Thursday, trusted NHL Insider Chris Johnston touched on the Matthews situation and dropped a bit of a bombshell regarding his health status.

"I know for a fact that he (Auston) was injured. And I know that they are still working out his treatment plan and I don't think surgery is totally off the table." - Johnston on Matthews perhaps requiring further surgical repairs this summer

I'm not surprised to hear that the injury issues are more significant than originally thought, but depending on the timeline for recovery, if Matthews does indeed have to go under the knife again, we could see the start to his season delayed for the 2nd consecutive year.

More to come as updates become available.
