Insider fears potential rule changes after Kadri's controversial OT goal in Game 4
The subject has been discussed ad nauseum over the past 48 hours, but Nazem Kadri's overtime goal against the Tampa Bay Lightning probably should have been called for too many men on the merit of what is written in the NHL's rule book. There's no question. But now, there is some concern that the controversial non-call may actually result in a change to the rules.
On Thursday, TSN's Pierre LeBrun joined the OverDrive crew for a bit of a chat on the subject and aired his concerns over a possible change to the rules that would allow for video review on plays where it is suspected that there were too many men on the ice.
"One of my fears out of this, if you really want to broaden the scope of what this could all mean, if that whenever something like this happens, there tends to be a bit of an eager reaction to come up with a rule change. If you remember, when San Jose scored in overtime in a playoff game a number of years ago off a hand pass against St. Louis, that did lead to an actual rule change and now you can review that, right, and nullify a goal.
I hope this doesn't lead to a rule change... You can't review everything. At some point, you have to trust the four people officiating the game and understand that there's still human error and that it's not going to be 100%. We can't get to the point where everything single play needs video review."
LeBrun likened the potential situation to be much like what we see so often in the NFL, where a big play happens for a key first down, or when a team scores a touchdown and the play is under review and often leads to the play being called back.
Really, there is a line. As LeBrun said, it's never going to be 100% accurate. Calls will be missed and bad calls will be made. For the benefit of the overall flow of the game and for the entertainment value for the fans, we simply can't have every play go under review. It's not as though plays like that one happen every game, it just so happened that this one in specific happened during the Stanley Cup Finals under the brightest spotlight. Had this happened in the regular season, nobody's even batting an eyelash. At some point, the league has to take things for what they are, accept that human error is inevitable and move on.
