The latest on the Leafs' bench boss seems to be that he'll be back next season, but there is still a substantial hole to fill behind the bench with the departure of assistant coach Spencer Carbery. As fate would have it, the man who replaced him behind the bench in Hershey may end up replacing him behind the bench in Toronto.
On Friday, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman mentioned Hershey Bears head coach Todd Nelson as a person of potential interest to the Leafs. Friedman mentioned that Nelson would not likely depart Hershey for a lateral move to Toronto to take over as Marlies head coach, but that an NHL job in Toronto as an assistant on Keefe's staff might interest him after winning a Calder Cup with the Bears last week.
Carbery, now the head coach of the Washington Capitals, ran the Leafs' power play over the past few seasons. If hired, there's no guarantee that Nelson would take on that same role, but there's no doubt that a coach with a championship pedigree would be a real asset to the Leafs.
