Insider reporting that the Flames and Leafs could be talking behind the scenes about a potential draft day decision

When the Toronto Maple Leafs hired ex-Flames GM Brad Treliving as the 18th GM in franchise history, the hiring was made with a provision from Calgary that Treliving would not be allowed to participate in the draft for the Leafs. This is obviously vastly different than what's happening in Pittsburgh with ex-Leafs GM Kyle Dubas, who is allowed to operate at the draft without limitations or restrictions imposed by the Leafs.

It's fairly commonplace for a team to place limitations or restrictions on a departing executive as a condition for allowing them to seek employment elsewhere while still under contract, but it's really at the discretion of the team. In Calgary's case, perhaps they were worried that the Leafs would use knowledge of how they plan to approach this year's draft to try to gain an edge. Obviously, the Leafs aren't nearly as concerned regarding Dubas, as the Leafs themselves don't have many picks in the draft.

This morning, during an appearance on TSN 1050's First Up, TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger spoke about the possibility of the Flames and the Leafs perhaps coming to an understanding that would allow Treliving to be with the Leafs at the draft table in Nashville in just under 2 weeks after all.

"There's a chance that [Calgary and Toronto] can find a compromise or middle ground here and Treliving will be allowed to operate as any GM would on the floor in Nashville or at the draft table of the Maple Leafs. But there's also a chance that ownership of the Calgary Flames is not going to relent.

If someone wants to make a deal with Treliving and the Toronto Maple Leafs, they're going to pick up the phone and text or call him and say 'hey, can we meet you off the floor?' There's going to be a million places where GMs go away from the peering eyes and the cameras - especially in round 1 of the NHL draft - and you have those types of conversations. So, it's not a huge, huge deal, but it's a fairly significant inconvenience.

I think that there's hope from the Maple Leafs' standpoint that the Flames will relent and that it becomes a non-issue and a non-story. But as of our reporting [on Thursday] the restrictions are still in place... this is not a NHL-governed issue. This is one club vs another club, so I guess there is a strong potential here that Calgary will say 'yeah, don't worry about it. It's not that big of a deal.'" - Dreger on the likelihood of the Flames allowing Treliving to take part in the Leafs' draft

We have, in the past, seen a number of new executives being granted permission from their former teams to take part in the draft after originally imposing these types of limitations, so as Dreger said on Friday morning, there's hope that the two sides can reach a compromise before the draft on June 28th that would allow Treliving to have a seat at the table on the draft floor in Nashville.
