With the dismissal of now ex-Leafs GM Kyle Dubas in Toronto, there are even more questions than answers than there were before regarding what might happen with the Leafs this summer. Perhaps the most intriguing question is what might happen with Auston Matthews now that Dubas, the GM with whom he had a lot of trust and a great relationship, is gone.

During his most recent edition of 32 Thoughts, Elliotte Friedman mentioned that the Leafs should now be prepared for the possibility that Matthews, who was once believed to be in line to sign his extension on July 1st, might now delay that decision and may not commit to anything this summer.

"I think at the very least now you have to be prepared for the possibility that he's not going to commit by July 1st and you may have to go into next season without an answer... What's the guarantee he or Nylander are going to commit by July 1st?" - Friedman on Matthews' decision now that Dubas is gone

This is right in line with what TSN's Chris Johnston had mentioned on Friday. Johnston had revealed that Matthews was no longer interesting in signing his deal right away. With so much uncertainty, it would certainly make sense as to why he might want to wait, but the tough part here is that with his NMC kicking in on July 1st, if the Leafs don't move him, they'll risk losing one of the best players in the world for absolutely nothing.
