Carbery, who has been with the Leafs since the 2021-22 season, is the mastermind behind the Leafs extremely successful, albeit frustrating to watch, powerplay. In that time, the Leafs have enjoyed the second best regular season power play percentage in the league, trailing only the Edmonton Oilers. It's surprising, considering how awful the drop pass zone entry strategy is to watch. Here's hoping Carbery's replacement, whomever it may be, has a better idea.
If he does indeed depart for a head coaching gig, Carbery would join both D.J. Smith and Dave Hakstol in leaving assistant coaching jobs with the Leafs for head coaching jobs elsewhere. Given the Leafs' situation at the moment, with their entire coaching and management staff's futures in the air, I find it odd that Carbery is being allowed to speak to other teams. There seems to be quite a lot of interest in his services. Should the Leafs be considering promoting him to head coach if Keefe is indeed gone? Or is there something about him that they just don't trust enough to give him a kick at the can as bench boss? He seems pretty highly-coveted, which is why it's a bit of a strange situation.
