Thursday's game against the Winnipeg Jets is a highly anticipated game for the Leafs after what was a fiery affair back in December. If you'll recall, we saw a referee save the entire Winnipeg Jets team from Wayne Simmonds, Kyle Clifford absolutely destroy Brenden Dillon and Jason Spezza landed himself a 6-game suspension for a retaliatory hit on Neal Pionk after the Jets defenseman went knee-on-knee with Leafs youngster Rasmus Sandin.
This game was always circled on the calendar for both teams, but now the game is anticipated for a different reason, as Jack Campbell could make his return to the net. Thursday is the earliest day that we could see Soup back in net for the Leafs, but if we don't see him against the Jets, he's still on track to return in early April.
Campbell has had an up and down season for the Leafs. He started the year as a Vezina candidate and earned himself a spot in the All Star game - the first time that it's happened in his career. Unfortunately, when the calendar flipped to 2022, we haven't seen the same Jack Campbell. He went from stealing games for the Leafs to costing them games, and it was painful to watch, because Soupy is very much a fan-favourite.
Now, in better health after recovering from his injury, Campbell will look to play closer to the form that had him in the Vezina discussion earlier this season.
