What an amazing person Jason Spezza is. The 38-year-old has now played 3 seasons with the Leafs, never taking a penny over the league's minimum salary. Two lockouts and multiple COVID shutdowns have really hurt the Leafs vet. He now sits at 995 career points with his future in hockey uncertain.

Spezza is probably not an every day NHLer at this point in his career, and if he had 5 more points to his credit, the conversation may be different. To leave the game now, at 995 points and without a Stanley Cup ring feels like a lot of unfinished business.

Spezza spoke to the media at the Leafs' locker cleanout day on Tuesday.

Kyle Dubas and the Leafs need to do right by Jason Spezza here. If he wants to play another season, they have to give him a contract. If he wants to transition into a role within the organization, they should certainly welcome that as well. Spezza is a fierce competitor, a fantastic role model and the Leafs are in his blood. This is a guy you want around your team, and a guy who's earned the opportunity to decide what his future will be. Whatever Jason Spezza decides he wants to do next, the Leafs need to throw their full support behind him.
