Tortorella's been quite vocal over the summer in regards to the lack of moves made over the off-season, the vitriol and hate that was being spewed towards the Flyers after acquiring Tony DeAngelo, and how everyone has them pegged to remain in the basement of the NHL. He has been consistent with his responses that he is blocking the outside noise and how it's not going to affect him or his team.
Nevertheless, when asked if he has found something that the Flyers are good at and can build off of as they open their season, his response was rather honest and candid as he simply said "No."
John Clark of NBCS Philadelphia posed this question to the head coach: "What are we good at? Have we found something that we can build on, an identity with this team?"
Tortorella continued by saying: "No. No. I think that's a huge part of becoming a team is developing that identity and no, I think we're a bit scattered and a huge part of my job is to bring it together and develop that identity. I've said this all along, this is one of the best cities in pro sports that you can join in with and develop that type of identity and has a history of playing the right way towards the city and that's what I would like to get it back to."
The Flyers became the first team in North American sports to alternate between making and missing the playoffs in a 10-year span from 2011-12 to 2020-21. They finished 4th last in the standings last year and made no significant changes over the off-season to improve the team outside of the hiring of John Tortorella. He is tasked with bringing Philadelphia back from the brink of irrelevancy and he's off to a great start.
