Wayne Simmonds, Adam Gaudette, Kyle Clifford and Victor Mete were placed on waivers yesterday as the Leafs set their final roster and all four cleared. Clifford, Mete and Gaudette will be sent down to the Marlies and will likely see some action with the Leafs throughout the season depending on injuries.
The only issue with all four clearing waivers this time around is that the Leafs are currently at the maximum contract limit of 50. That means that they will likely be making a trade for futures in the next few days and that Simmonds should be dealt to give him the opportunity to continue his NHL career.
The Leafs made it known yesterday that Simmonds was available for trade as they wanted to do right by him and give him an opportunity to continue playing. At this point in his career, Simmonds has three options, with the most likely being traded. The other two are retirement or playing a key leadership role for the Marlies, which I can't see him wanting to do if he still feels he has something left to offer at the highest level.
