As we approach the Christmas break, this marks the near halfway mark of the season for many leagues. With the break right around the corner, the CHL has posted numerous season leaders in the categories of points, goals, assists, and goaltender wins. For Leafs fans, there is one player and category to look at in particular.
Ty Voit, a fifth-round Maple Leafs pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, is the leader of "best distributor" in the CHL through 32 games of play. Voit leads the league in assists, where he has tallied a staggering 44 with the addition of 9 goals to add to his tremendous season. The list shows Voit to be well ahead of the competition, with the next closest being 17-year-old sensation
Connor Bedard with 37, seven behind Voit.
With his outbreak in the playmaking factor of the game, Voit is just ten assists away from passing his OHL career high (54), and he's technically not even halfway through the season. Adding to his success, he currently sits with 53 points, on pace to pass his career high of 80 points with ease.
Despite his stellar play with the Sting this season, Voit was surprisingly left off Team USA at the World Juniors. What's worse is that one of the best young puck distributors in the game didn't even receive an invite to selection camp. With many stating that he is a machine offensively, the critics point the fingers at the fact he is playing in the CHL, not somewhere in America, labelling him as one of the biggest snubs left off the roster this tournament.
Even with the lost opportunity, Voit hopefully can use this as motivation to ignite something within him to continue dominating in his final season. Nonetheless, this is a mistake to leave a player of this caliber and ability off any team, especially one competing for gold.
The 2022-23 season marks his final season of junior hockey. With his performance over the last couple of seasons, where he has been a point-per-game producer, Voit will almost certainly be joining the AHL's Toronto Marlies next season.
Voit looks to be another player in the Maple Leafs system that has been a valuable, underrated selection by general manager Kyle Dubas. The Leafs tend to be criticized for their limited picks and penchant for continuously trading down, but Dubas appears to have hit the dart board with a mid-late round pick yet again.
