Thursday night, Leaf fans held their collective breath as goaltender Joseph Woll was helped off the ice following a routine save. Midway through the third period, Woll attempted to catch a weak shot from the corner by an Ottawa Senators forward. In his attempt to catch the puck, he twisted awkwardly and went down in a considerable amount of pain.

Following the game, he was seen on crutches and TSN's Chris Johnston reported yesterday that Woll would not be out short term. Today, the Leafs announced that Woll will be "week-to-week" with an ankle sprain. In what could have been a hip, groin or even severe knee injury, this seems like the best possible outcome for Woll and the Leafs.

Defenseman Timothy Liljegren has been out for six weeks with his own high ankle sprain, but has been skating for the past week or so and appears to be inching closer to a return. While Woll will likely be out until February, it is certainly good news that it is not a hip or knee issue, as those often require surgery and a very lengthy recovery timelines.

Woll was in the process of closing out his best game as a Leaf in what was his fifth straight start. Woll had recently taken over starting duties from Ilya Samsonov, who has struggled so far this season.
