Nylander is in the final year of a 6-year deal that paid him a little over $6.96M per season and, while the deal was a fine one for him when it was signed, there's no question that over the last few seasons, Nylander has vastly outperformed that contract and is undoubtedly deserving of a substantial pay bump.
Following Nylander's sensational 17-game run at the start of the year, we saw the Stockholm native suffer a 3-game pointless streak. Some had viewed this as the unavoidable ebbs and flows of an 82-game season and the beginning of Nylander coming back down to Earth. Well, we can put a cork in that line of thought, because following that 3-game streak without a point, Nylander has built himself another 12-game point streak, during which he has scored 19 points, bringing his total to 16 goals and 46 points in 32 games on the season.
Something that has flown under the radar in Nylander's breakout season is the fact that he has now recorded at least a point in 29 of his 32 games. For a guy whose biggest knock in recent years has been his consistency, I'd say that he's probably been as consistent as they come.
Nylander's ask on his next deal prior to this season was believed to be in the $10M range. Now, with how well he's played this year, we have seen a number of reports coming out, including the most recent from Darren Dreger, that Nylander's camp may now be looking for as much as $11M per season on an 8-year deal. At this point, we can't really argue that he's not worth every penny. The 27-year-old is currently on pace for 118 points this season.
