Domi signed a 1-year, $3M with the Leafs this summer and from what he has had to say about the opportunity throughout the last few months, he's waited for this moment for a long, long time. Domi, as a child, was often in the rink with his dad, running around the family deck and/or the Leafs locker room on any given night. There are even some iconic photos of Tie with Max on his lap at his locker room stall.
As cool as it would have been to hear, Domi did not actually get his dad's old stall in the Leafs' locker room, but he revealed on Monday who does; linemate William Nylander. Domi revealed that he resides on the other side of the locker room.
When Domi steps on the ice for the first time in a Leafs jersey at Scotiabank Arena, he's going to have a whole lot of support, not only from his family, who are sure to be in attendance, but from another Leafs legend as well. He revealed on Monday during his media availability that Mats Sundin will be watching and cheering him on.
"He's my No. 1 cheerleader," Domi said of Sundin.
It's so cool to see this whole thing come full circle for Domi, who has wanted to be a Leaf for a very long time. We're not likely to see him fight in the pre-season, but I'm sure that he'll play with plenty of pace and plenty of edge tonight.
It took Max all of 13 seconds to earn his first penalty in a Maple Leafs jersey in his first pre-season game against Ottawa. With the energy he'll be feeling this evening, I'd imagine we'll see him occupy the penalty box that his dad made famous more than once tonight.
