However, given the remarks from President Brendan Shanahan and the information that has surfaced about Dubas' last minute counter to the Leafs' contract offer, and the fact that Shanahan didn't even attempt to salvage a deal, we could see Dubas back in the NHL sooner than later. According to Elliotte Friedman, the Pittsburgh Penguins, who are in the middle of their GM search, are going to ask the Leafs for permission to speak with Dubas. It is likely that what was said and made public by Shanahan on Friday afternoon has left a sour taste in Dubas' mouth and it could have lit a fire in him again to want to prove Shanahan and MLSE wrong in their decision.
Whether Dubas will walk back his word about not popping up somewhere new in a few weeks or not remains to be seen, but in his tenure with the Leafs he always honoured what he said. As I mentioned though, he could very well just choose to join another team just to stick it to the Leafs' brass here. He clearly wanted to come back, which means that his family was fine with him committing to remaining a general manager. Now, it might just be in a different city.
