The Maple Leafs themselves did not take part in the waiver wire purge, but 13 other teams did. A trio of former Leafs did, however, wind up being waived. Mac Hollowell was placed on the waivers by the New York Rangers, Scott Sabourin was placed on waivers by the San Jose Sharks, and Brett Seney was placed on waivers by the Chicago Blackhawks.
Hollowell was drafted in the 4th round of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft by the Maple Leafs but only managed to suit up for 6 NHL games. He did play in parts of 4 seasons for the Toronto Marlies, where he scored 7 goals and 61 points in 124 games. He signed with the Rangers this summer one a one-year deal.
Sabourin has primarily been an AHL player but has played in parts of 3 seasons at the NHL-level, including 1 game for the Maple Leafs and 6 for the Marlies in 2020-21. He is coming off a 16-goal and 33-point season with the Belleville Senators in 2022-23 in just 51 games.
Seney, similarly to Sabourin, has primarily been an AHLer for the Binghamton Devils, Toronto Marlies, and Rockfod IceHogs. He had a very good season with the Marlies in 2021-22 where he scored 17 goals and 59 points in just 62 games, while also appearing in 2 NHL games for the Maple Leafs. He walked as a free agent and signed with the Blackhawks in 2022.
Another interesting name to hit the waiver wire is Akil Thomas by the Los Angeles Kings. Thomas was drafted in the 2nd round of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft and has been in the AHL with the Ontario Reign ever since. He will always be remembered for the golden goal in the 2020 World Junior Championships - it was his only goal of the tournament.
