There is a lot of speculation surrounding the Leafs looking to move on from Mrazek and his $3.8M AAV, which means that they'll almost certainly be looking to retain the services of Campbell. The question is, how much is it going to cost Leafs GM Kyle Dubas?
Well, according to TSN's Chris Johnston, Campbell could be in line for a sizable contract this summer, despite a very rocky second half of the season and yet another first round elimination.
If Soup really does wish to remain in Toronto to try to compete for a Stanley Cup with the Leafs, perhaps he would be willing to leave some money on the table in order to provide the club with a bit of extra financial flexibility, something we saw Morgan Rielly do back in October.
Of the names of comparables listed above, Linus Ullmark has career stats quite similar to Campbell's. Ullmark signed a 4-year, $20M with the Boston Bruins last summer. The one argument here is that he is both younger and possesses more NHL experience than Campbell, albeit not much more. Can Dubas and company use the Ullmark deal to negotiate a contract for Campbell that carries an AAV lower than $5? We'll have our answer in a few short months.
