I don't think it's any real secret that players who come to Toronto are often not interested in taking less money or less term for a chance to win. However, one of the Leafs' newest additions, Max Domi, said that's exactly what he did during free agency, leading us to believe that he had offers that were both higher in AAV and longer in term. In the end, he decided to take less in Toronto to try to win.

Domi revealed this on Tuesday, following the Leafs making his contract official, via an official release from the organization. Domi spoke with the media on a Zoom call while away in Europe on vacation. You could hear it in his voice and see it on his face just how excited he was to be a Leaf.

In the clip below, Domi spoke about how it came together, but most importantly, that winning was important to him. He didn't mind the 1-year deal worth $3M because of how taking less will give him a good chance to pull off something epic with the Leafs.

"Obviously, you want security and whatnot, but when you're trying to win, it's difficult to do whatever you gotta do. You can't have everything, so for me, the most important thing was winning and if that means taking a little less money or less term or whatever that might be, it's a no-brainer. I believe in this group, I'm a big fan of them and I'm just looking forward to being a part of it." - Domi on taking less to win in Toronto

Hopefully Domi's attitude rubs off on the rest of the group, to be entirely honest. We know that Auston Matthews has already mentioned that he's open to taking a little less as well, but until that deal is signed, we really won't know how much of a hair cut he's willing to take. With rumours circulating over the last year that Matthews could be the first $15M man, does that mean taking $14M is taking less? $13.5M? $13M? Boy, would it be nice to see Matthews sign 8 years at $12.7M, but I think that might be too much of a pipe dream, especially when the rumoured term for Matthews is in that 3-5 year range.
