On Tuesday, the Detroit Red Wings shocked many in the hockey world when they placed forward Jakub Vrana on waivers in what was seen as surprise move. Vrana still has 1 year remaining on his 3-year contract with a $5.25 million AAV. But, the reason he found himself on waivers was because the Red Wings have found themselves in a roster squeeze.

Robby Fabbri is set to return to the lineup after missing the entire season to date and Tyler Bertuzzi isn't far off from returning as well. The Red Wings have reiterated that Vrana is healthy and ready to play and the move is specifically roster-based.

Vrana was released from the player assistance program two weeks ago and was then assigned to the Grand Rapids Griffins a week after on a conditioning loan. He suited up for 2 games this season, scoring a goal and adding an assist.

Vrana was traded to the Red Wings from the Washington Capitals in the spring of 2021 in exchange for Anthony Mantha. The Wings also received a first round pick in 2021 as well as a second round pick in 2022. Vrana has accumulated 98 goals and 189 points across 323 games in parts of 7 seasons, including a career high 25 goals and 52 points in 2019-20.
