Red Wings waive defender on his birthday

The Detroit Red Wings placed veteran defenseman Danny DeKeyser on waivers today. DeKeyser is on the last year of a deal that he signed in 2016 that says him $5 million per season. DeKeyser has been declining for a few seasons, but this year, his decline got steeper and he's found himself in the press box a few times.

It's not just newsworthy that a player like DeKeyser, who because of his cap hit, will likely go unclaimed is on waivers. Unfortunately, he was waived on his 32nd birthday day.

DeKeyser has been in the NHL for 10 seasons and he's played over 500 games. Although he isn't the player that earned himself his big contract in 2016, waiving a 10-year veteran on his birthday seems like a move that could have been done another day.

Yesterday, the Red Wings claimed former top-5 pick, Olli Juolevi from waivers and forward Jakob Vrana is expected to return from injury. As a result, DeKeyser is the odd man out. The recent moves by the Wings seem to chalk this up to a coincidence, but the timing couldn't be worse for the birthday boy.
