Obviously, this is one that we should be taking with a huge grain of salt, given that it's not being reported by any credible NHL insider, but Berger speculated that it could be William Nylander, which would make some sense, but would also be a risky play, as Berger also stated.
Nylander is entering the final year of his current deal and is due a substantial raise. Some early reports suggested that the Leafs want his number to begin with an 8, while the Nylander camp could be pursuing something that starts with a 9 or a 10. There's also the fact that Nylander's agent, Lewis Gross, delayed things long enough last year for Johnny Gaudreau, another client, to walk via free agency to consider. Naturally, with Brad Treliving now at the helm in Toronto, he'll want to avoid that.
Perhaps Berger's most shocking statement came after speculating that a Nylander trade could be in the works was his statement that he'd prefer to trade Auston Matthews.
I don't know, man.. this is one that I have a lot of trouble believing. With the draft now just 7 days away, I suppose we won't have to wait long to find out whether or not this report holds any weight.
