The 22-year-old was drafted in the 2nd round of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft and quickly became one of the organization's top prospects. He scored 27 goals and 55 points in 54 games in his draft season and improved to the tune of 55 goals and 86 points in just 46 games during the COVID-interrupted 2019-20 season for the Peterborough Petes.
Injuries have played their part in his diminishing numbers since 2020-21. He has only played in 31 NHL games in parts of 3 seasons where he has scored 3 goals and 7 points. Conversely, in parts of 4 seasons with the Toronto Marlies, he has tallied 25 goals and 53 points in 58 games.
After a rather disappointing training camp, Robertson was sent down to the Marlies and instead of pouting or letting his emotions get the better of him, he has scored 3 goals and 7 points in 7 games to start the season. In his most recent game against the Belleville Senators, Robertson recorded a primary assist in the 2nd period and scored in the 4th round of the shootout with the game on the line before Max Ellis scored the winner.
Rumours have been rampant since the beginning of summer about Toronto looking for a trade partner to give him more opportunities and playing time but, for the time being, they haven't been blown away by any of the offers. If he continues to produce and excel in the minors, he might be one of the first names called up if and when the Maple Leafs require an extra skater up front.
