Treliving sent a clear message to his team when he signed the likes of Ryan Reaves, Max Domi and Tyler Bertuzzi. That message was that the Leafs would no longer be pushed around. It appears as though that message was delivered to the entire roster, as several Leafs came to training camp having bulked up significantly. Here were some of the more substantial updates to the Maple Leafs' measurements:
Auston Matthews 6'3 215 (+7 lbs)
Morgan Rielly 6'1 225 (+3 lbs)
Conor Timmins - 6'2 206 (+21 lbs)
Tyler Bertuzzi - 6'2 200 (+1", 14 lbs)
Max Domi - 5'10 208 (+14 lbs)
Martin Jones - 6'5 203 (+1", 13 lbs)
Sam Lafferty - 6'2 205 (+1", 11 lbs)
Keith Petruzzelli - 6'6 190 (+10 lbs)
Conor Timmins stands out the most from this bunch with an incredible 21 pound difference from his previous season. He wants to solidify a roster spot heading into the season and jumping from 185 pounds to 206 is a good start for the 6'2 blueliner.
Tyler Bertuzzi and Max Domi had enough snarl and snot in their game before their 14lb increases, which only makes the Leafs top-6 that much more dangerous and tougher to play against. Add in the fact that Auston Matthews stands in at 215 lbs now and the Leafs are definitely brewing something different this year.
In 2022-23, the Maple Leafs ranked 23rd in average weight around the NHL, coming in at 196 lbs. Tampa Bay was at the top, Vegas came 3rd, Edmonton 4th, and Boston in at the 8th spot. Heading into the 2023-24 season, it was clear the Leafs prioritized getting bigger and nastier and that should reflect in their on-ice performance.
