Shanahan's handling of Dubas firing is reportedly hindering the GM search in Toronto
The fallout from Kyle Dubas' dismissal just continues to grow. One MLSE staffer has compared the current state of the organization to HBO's Game of Thrones series. Backstabbing and rumours abound as the remaining staff seem to have split into factions. Some, loyal to Dubas, are "going after" Brendan Shanahan, others are trying to use the chaos to climb higher in the organization.
Amid all the chaos, Brendan Shanahan and the MLSE Board of Directors are now facing a rushed GM search. Evidently, Shanahan was so sure that Dubas would be back that he didn't have a plan B in place. On the most recent 32 Thoughts Podcast, Elliotte Friedman recounted a recent conversation with an executive from another team, one who, in his opinion, the Leafs should be interested in, but who wouldn't want the job. By the sounds of it, Shanahan airing out the team's dirty laundry and the chaos that has followed regarding Kyle Dubas is likely to make the Leafs' GM search that much harder.
"He said to me that what he didn't like about all this is that the Maple Leafs aired all that dirty laundry. He said that he could go in there and he could have a good run and when it's all over all of his business could be thrown out like that. He said that would give him pause." - Elliotte Friedman on a conversation with another executive about the Leafs' vacant GM job
So, not only did Shanahan fire Dubas without having a backup plan, the way he did it is possibly pushing candidates away from the job. I was criticized on an earlier article for claiming that Shanahan had sent the Leafs into full-blown chaos. As it turns out, the situation is much worse, and much more chaotic than first thought. Losing Dubas may or may not sink the Leafs, but the way he was dismissed may cause the entire front office to crumble. When this is all laid at Shanahan's feet, I wonder if he'll regret making such a rash decision on Dubas.
