For 40 years, the Leafs' all time single season goal scoring record was stuck at 54 goals. In over 100 years of history, only 4 players have eclipsed the 50 goal plateau in Toronto. The record was finally broken last season by Auston Matthews, but for the 4 decades preceding last season, Rick Vaive was the record holder. A Leaf from 1979-80 to 1986-87, Vaive was a rare bright spot in a dark time for hockey in Toronto.

Vaive would eventually leave Toronto for a two year stint in Chicago, then move on to finish his NHL career with the Buffalo Sabres. It was during his time with the Sabres that he crossed paths with a young Brendan Shanahan. To Vaive's surprise, Shanny took the first opportunity that presented itself to drop his gloves and beat the snot out of the three-time 50-goal scorer. Vaive was shocked by the encounter and asked Shanahan what he'd done to earn such a beating. Shanahan responded by accusing Vaive of refusing to sign an autograph for him a few years earlier.

Vaive shared the story on a recent episode of the Spittin' Chiclets Podcast. He denied Shanahan's accusation, claiming he would never do that to a 14-year-old kid. Now that approximately 40 years have passed since the incident, it's nothing but a funny hockey story. Eighteen-year-old Brendan Shanahan was clearly a person who would hold a grudge for petty reasons. One has to wonder if he let his pettiness get the better of him again with regard to Kyle Dubas. If that's the case, he may not be the best person to be running the Toronto Maple Leafs.
