With Matt Murray already sidelined due to injury, the net went to third string goaltender Erik Kallgren to start the third period. Thankfully, Kallgren looked calm and steady in goal, stopping all 7 shots he faced in the third period to secure the victory for the Buds.
After the game, Sheldon Keefe was asked about his team's current goaltending situation. His response told the entire story.
The Leafs are in a really tough spot right now with Murray, Samsonov and rookie Joseph Woll all currently sidelined. Further to that, the only two other goaltenders they have on NHL contracts are Erik Kallgren, who has been horrendous when leaned on this season, and Dennis Hildeby, who was drafted this year and is currently playing in Sweden.
It's very likely that we see the Leafs either sign Marlies goaltender Keith Petruzzelli to an entry-level deal or seek out a UFA goaltender to bring in on a one-year deal. With the Leafs in Carolina to take on the Hurricanes tomorrow night, I'd imagine we'll have our answer either tonight or tomorrow morning.
