There's been more old habits appearing from previous seasons too, including taking an intolerable amount of bench minors. Yesterday, the Leafs took a critical too-many-men penalty, their seventh bench minor of the year, which has them sitting atop the league for the most in the league - not exactly a statistic teams would want to lead in. Needless to say, Sheldon Keefe wasn't pleased.
Keefe may have some responsibility for the too many men penalties, but by the tone of his comment and the fact that he's losing patience, perhaps he's put the onus more on the players for this repeated problem.
As this years' penalty kill has taken a step back from the success of last year, the Leafs need to make efforts to stay disciplined and out of the penalty box. It starts with the basics, including keeping bench minors to an absolute minimum.
