Late in the first period, Liljegren was in a foot race with Bruins captain Brad Marchand, skating towards a loose puck in the corner of the Leafs' zone when Marchand got his stick between Liljegren's legs and took his feet out from under him, sending him crashing feet first into the boards. Liljegren remained on the ice for a few moments and then struggled to return to the bench. He went to the dressing room and did not return, forcing the Leafs to play the remainder of the game with five defensemen.
Following the game, Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe provided an update on Liljegren's injury status.
The Leafs are already thin on the blueline as Jake McCabe is out with a groin injury and Conor Timmins is still recovering from the injury he sustained in training camp. With William Lagesson already in the lineup, it would appear that Simon Benoit will be the next man up for the Leafs on the blueline. Liljegren was having an excellent start to his season playing top-four minutes and although he has just one assist through the first ten games, he was very sound defensively while averaging slightly under 18 minutes per game.
