Team Canada once again boasts an incredible, star studded young roster and among prospects and draft eligible players, Toronto Maple Leafs youngsters Fraser Minten and Easton Cowan are doing their best to make the final cut.
Today was the final game of the World Junior selection camp and Mark Masters jotted down the lines in anticipation. The Canadians ran with some prominent names like Macklin Celebrini, Carson Rehkopf, and Cowan among others but a lot of these players are still fighting for their spots this year.
Some notables that were not dressed included Owen Beck, Maveric Lamoureux, Matthew Savoie, Tristan Luneau, Conor Geekie, Denton Mateychuk and, of course, Minten. Masters was quick to point out that this specific group of players were the virtual locks to make the squad.
Hard to disagree with that notion as Savoie has 5 points in 6 games with the Rochester Americans of the AHL and 24 points in 11 games for the Wenatchee Wild of the WHL, Geekie has 20 goals and 49 points for the Wenatchee Wild as well, and Luneau has 3 points in 7 games with the Anaheim Ducks and 2 points in 6 games for the San Diego Gulls of the AHL.
Minten has had a great season as well as he made the Maple Leafs club outright out of training camp and suited up for 4 games. Since then, he went back to the WHL and has accumulated 15 points in 13 games with 2 different clubs.
The tournament kicks off on the 26th of December and runs through the 5th of January and will be held in Sweden this year. Canada will be pegged against Sweden, Finland, Germany, and Latvia in Group A. When the roster is announced, expect Minten's name to be among those who will represent Canada at the tournament.
