The Montreal Canadiens have hired agent Kent Hughes as the 18th General Manager in franchise history. The move comes roughly two months after Jeff Gorton took over as the President of Hockey Operation and former GM Marc Bergevin was relieved of his duties.

Hughes is a Montreal native and is bilingual, so he fits the French speaking requirements the come with being a high ranking executive in Montreal. Hughes was a player agent before being named GM of the Habs. Notable clients of his include: Patrice Bergeron, Kris Letang, Drake Batherson and Darnell Nurse.

You have to wonder whether the Habs will pursue any of these players with their former agent now at the helm. Bergeron and Letang, being from the province, are especially intriguing. Both players are pending UFA's.

Hughes will now find himself on the other side of player negotiations as he takes over as Canadiens General Manager.

The Habs have struggled this season as they sit in last place in the NHL with a 7-25-5 record. Hughes joins President of Hockey Operations, Jeff Gorton as the look to brighten the future of the Montreal Canadiens.

Hughes, Gorton, and owner Geoff Molson are expected to speak to the media tomorrow.
