Knies has become more comfortable in recent weeks, but especially during Saturday's tilt against the Pittsburgh Penguins, notching a Gordie Howe hat trick (a goal, an assist and a fight in the same game), becoming the talk of the NHL in pretty short order.
Most NHLers have some sort of a nickname, with most just being a variation of their last name - Hallsy, Jonesy, Mack, etc. Some, however, are a little more creative. Auston Matthews, for example, has a few good ones. "Tone", "Tony", "Papi". Montreal's Arber Xhekaj has a pretty unique one, "Wi-Fi", as his teammates have told him that his last name looks like someone's Wi-Fi password. Now, thanks to the legendary Joe Bowen, Matthew Knies may have a new nickname.
Last night, during the Leafs' game against the New York Rangers, Bowen referred to Knies as Matthew "Knuckles" Knies during his radio broadcast, an obvious play on his first career NHL fight this past weekend. Obviously, this name is slightly ironic, as Knies barely landed a punch in the brief altercation with Pittsburgh's John Ludwig.
Time will tell whether or not it sticks, but there are certainly worse names to go by in the NHL than "Knuckles". Personally, I sort of like it. It's like a 20's mobster nickname.
Do you like the nickname Bowen has given to Knies? Do you think it will stick? Let us know in the poll below!
