That is exactly what ended up happening as Kane was traded a few days before the trade deadline to New York as a part of a three-team trade with the Arizona Coyotes brokering the deal for salary retention purposes.
A video was posted of Hawks GM, Kyle Davidson, giving Patrick Kane the news over the phone. He started off by giving Kane the run down of what was going on before ending with a heartfelt thank you for everything he had done and accomplished over his career in Chicago.
"We're at the end of the road here with everything, I know it's been a long emotional time but we're just kind of in the process of going through things with the league to make you a New York Ranger.... just want to thank you for everything. You know, you've done so much for the organization and fans and want to wish you, Amanda, Patrick the Third, just all the best and just remember that whatever jersey you're wearing, you're part of the Blackhawks family."
Kane was just as grateful and responded back with:
"I appreciate it and I'm obviously very grateful of everything you guys did during this whole process and how you went about it was very classy and I appreciate that."
Now with the New York Rangers, Kane will look to help his new team win their first Stanley Cup since 1994, as well as try add a fourth ring to his collection.
