The host mentions that Matthews knows that if the Leafs don't make it out of the first round, he has a legitimate reason to want to leave. He also mentions that you don't score 60 without knowing where the puck is going and when Matthews saw "O'Reilly's finger just hanging there, he thought, if I just snap that little carrot dangling there, I'm gone."
@empty.netters CP coming in HOT with a big time tinfoil hat theory on the Toronto 'Broken Finger -Gate" situation. Is it possible this was calculated?! 🥅 #nhl #hockey #podcast #newepisode #torontomapleleafs #austonmatthews #ryanorielly #conspricytheroy #tinfoilhat ♬ original sound - Empty Netters
This has to be the most outlandish take I've seen in a very long time. Can Matthews hit a thumb tack in the corner of the net, absolutely, and I'm sure he could hit someone's hand if he wanted to, but to suggest he was aiming at O'Reilly to hinder the Leafs' playoff chances is an all-time conspiracy theory. Until next season begins, let's not think we know what Matthews wants or is going to do. We may even have an answer sooner than September, as he is eligible to sign an extension as early as July 1st.
Regardless of what Matthews decides, he will be a Leaf for at least one more season and instead of making outlandish tinfoil hat theories, we should just enjoy watching one of the greatest goal-scorers of our generation.
