Waivers opened yesterday afternoon for the first time during training camp and we already saw a handful of players waived by their respective teams, including 5 by the Pittsburgh Penguins. Today, only former Vancouver Canucks netminder Spencer Martin was claimed, by the Columbus Blue Jackets. Everyone else, including 2018 17th overall pick Ty Smith, had cleared.

On Friday, a number of new players were placed on waivers, including two former Leafs in Riley Nash and Adam Gaudette.

Nash signed a 2-year deal with the New York Rangers on July 1st this off-season worth $775K per season, but finds himself on waivers which is likely to allow for some flexibility with the Rangers' roster. Nash was originally acquired by the Leafs from Columbus at the 2020-21 trade deadline and became a UFA in the summer of 2021.

Gaudette, who signed a 1-year deal with St. Louis in this summer, was also placed on waivers, likely for the same reason - flexibility. Gaudette was part of the Leafs' package that was sent to St. Louis in the Ryan O'Reilly trade. Gaudette spent all of last season in the AHL between the Marlies and Springfield Thunderbirds, where he registered 27 goals and 24 assists in 65 games.

Yes, the past two days have been fairly busy for waivers, but it's nothing compared to what's coming as teams look to begin trimming down their rosters to resemble something closer to an opening night roster.
