We have an update to report on Kirill Tankov, the Pittsburgh Penguins prospect who was nailed from behind in KHL action on Monday, sending him head-first into the end boards with a Dynamo player finishing the check and putting an enormous amount of pressure on his head and neck.

According to a follow-up report, Tankov suffered a fracture of the C5 vertebrae and came extremely close to being completely paralyzed. Absolutely terrifying - and now Tankov will miss the entire 2022-23 season.

"Match TV" became aware of the shocking details of the injury of the foward "SKA-Neva" Kirill Tankov, which he received in the match of the regular championship of the VHL against "Dynamo" from St. Petersburg. The player was pushed in the back on board, and then he was taken to the hospital on a stretcher.

After the initial examination, doctors diagnosed a fracture of the cervical vertebra, presumably the fifth. With a high degree of probability, Tankov was out of action for a whole year.

On account of the 20-year-old Tankov 55 matches in the VHL, in which he scored 11 goals and gave 15 assists.

I'd imagine that we'll soon hear of disciplinary action for Artyom Maltsev, the player who nearly ended Tankov's career. These types of hits have no place in the game and I'd expect the punishment will reflect that.
