Yesterday, the Toronto Maple Leafs put Ilya Samsonov on waivers in an effort to help him get back on track and regain last season's form. It was announced this afternoon that he cleared waivers and is now eligible join the Toronto Marlies.
Samsonov is not expected to play any games for them this week, but rather spend his time working with the entire coaching staff and using all of the resources available to help him. Following Leafs practice today, Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe commented on why the Leafs chose not to take this route with Samsonov.
The Leafs' plan is to give him at least a week with the Marlies while allowing breakout prospect Dennis Hildeby the opportunity to earn some NHL experience. Depending on how Hildeby performs and how Samsonov does during his assignment this week, we may see these plans extend beyond this week. Time will tell.
