Gretzky retired back in 1999, following a 20-year career and after trying his hand at coaching, running the bench for the then Phoenix Coyotes from 2005-2009, also acting as the head of hockey operations. He took a bit of a step back until 2016, when he joined the Edmonton Oilers as a partner and vice chairman with the Oilers Entertainment Group. He held that position until 2021, when he stepped down. Now an analyst for NHL on TNT, Gretzky works with a panel on a national broadcast.
During Thursday's pre-game coverage before Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals matchup between the Florida Panthers and Carolina Hurricanes, Gretzky got into it with a fellow panelist in Paul "Biz Nasty" Bissonnette. It was all in good fun, with Biz poking at Gretzky about the Edmonton Oilers. However, in Gretzky's response to Bissonnette, the Leafs got caught in the crossfire. You can see the exchange in the video below:
Ouch, Gretz.. that hurts. But also, it's sort of true, so we forgive you. With so many Leafs being almost completely invisible in Round 2, we can't blame you for going after the low-hanging fruit.
