When Steven Lorentz joined the Maple Leafs on a PTO this fall, there were no guarantees that he'd earn himself a contract in Toronto. The risk was great for Lorentz, as he had passed on legitimate contract offers to pursue a deal with the Leafs on his professional tryout. Thankfully for him, everything worked out and he was able to secure the contract that he was hoping to land when he signed his tryout agreement.
Lorentz helped the Leafs to build an early 3-0 lead over the New Jersey Devils last night, scoring on a filthy backhand from the slot.
Following the game, which ended in a 4-2 Leafs victory, the team took to social media to share an old photo of Lorentz, similar to the one snapped of John Tavares during his childhood. While the Tavares photo had shown him wrapped up in Leafs bed sheets, Lorentz's photo shows him dressed in his extremely fashionable Leafs pajamas. That's right, folks -- there's a new pajama boy in town.
As it turns out, Lorentz never really grew out of his Maple Leafs' fandom and remained a dreamer throughout his high school years. In fact, Lorentz had stated in his high school graduation yearbook submission that in 15 years, he sees himself playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Early on in his tenure in Toronto, Lorentz has already become a bit of a fan favourite for his relentlessness, hounding pucks and hitting anything that moves. If he continues the way he's going, the one-year deal he's on may quickly lead to a multi-year contract extension.
