"Toronto Maple Leafs fans have been asking for the team to land a top 4 defenseman going back to last year. The team has yet do so, instead signing veteran Ron Hainsey and making him a top pairing defenseman, however it came very close to being a different story last summer. According to Brian Burke who's currently working for Sportsnet, the Leafs came very close to landing a top 4 defenseman last summer. Last summer the Calgary Flames acquired defenseman Travis Hamonic from the New York Islanders in a trade full of future draft picks. Calgary acquired Hamonic from New York for a 2018 first round pick, a 2018 second round pick and either a second round pick in 2019 or 2020. Along with Hamonic, the Islanders also sent a fourth round selection in 2019 or 2020.
According to Burke who was working with the Flames at the time, the Leafs were in on Hamonic offering the Islanders practically the same exact deal. The Flames failed to qualify for the playoffs and now have no draft picks for the first three rounds of this years draft. Are you happy the Islanders chose the Flames offer or do you think Hamonic would have been the perfect partner for Morgan Rielly?
