"San Jose Sharks veteran forward Joe Thornton will become an unrestricted free agent this summer and could hit the open market. Last summer Thornton was in the same position, and had meetings set up with various teams including the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens, however the veteran forward canceled all those meetings at the last minute and decided to stay in San Jose on a one year deal. It was the same summer that life long Shark, Patrick Marleau, decided to leave the Bay Area and join the Leafs. «Obviously, I loved playing with Patty and it was just like, 'Wow, Patty Marleau is going to be putting on a blue and white jersey and this is going to be strange and he's not going to be there at training camp,'» Thornton said earlier this season. «It was different, but as you know and everybody knows throughout the sport, it's business.» Could Thornton follow his longtime friend to Toronto to add some more veteran presence to a young lineup that needs it when playoff time comes around?Doesn't look too likely as Thornton recently stated that he would be willing to take less money to stay in San Jose. Thornton stated he'd like to help the Sharks sign other free agents and is willing to take a huge paycut "there's enough money to go around". Would you have liked to see a Thornton-Marleau reunion in Toronto?
Joe Thornton also wants to remain w/ #SJSharks, said he'd be willing to sign another one year deal and take a pay cut to help to the team sign other free agents: there's enough money to go around — Paul Gackle (@GackleReport) May 8, 2018
