Yesterday, it was reported that the Leafs should not be worried about an offer-sheet for Nick Robertson. However, it would be wise of the Leafs and GM Brad Treliving to prepare themselves for one for two reasons.
The first and most obvious reason is that it is a way for Robertson to potentially get himself out of Toronto if the Leafs are not going to actively try to trade him following his trade request. Secondly, Robertson has actually outperformed Dylan Holloway production-wise. Through 89 career games, Holloway has amassed just 9 goals and 18 points while Robertson has 17 goals and 34 points in 87 career games. Holloway was successfully offer sheeted by the St. Louis Blues this week.
For Robertson, he would have to accept an offer-sheet worth more than the $1.25M in cap space that the Leafs have, otherwise they will simply match and he will be stuck on a team he does not want to be a part of. Teams are always looking to add more scoring to their lineups for cheap and although he does not play center like Holloway, an offer-sheet with an AAV between $1.5M and $2M would be a fairly good bargain for a 22-year-old coming off of a 14-goal season in which he only played 56 games and just over 11 minutes per game.
As training camp draws closer and the Leafs and Robertson at a stalemate, it will be something to keep an eye on.
