July is almost over and the craziness of early free agency is long gone. Almost every notable player has re-signed with their team or has found a new home with another.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have most of their roster spots locked up. However, Jani Hakanpaa's contract is still not official. If he can't pass a physical and the deal falls through, Brad Treliving may consider acquiring a different defenseman, one that played for him before.
Oliver Kylington was drafted 60th overall in the 2015 NHL Draft by the Calgary Flames when Brad Treliving was General Manager. He has average size and is not overly physical. Like any defensemen, he has brain cramps from time to time.
What Kylington does well is skate. He glides effortlessly and has good speed both with and without the puck. He often makes smart plays thanks to his good vision, is a smooth passer and has a good shot from the blueline.
He's not a giant shot blocker and PK expert like Hakanpaa, nor does he shoot right, but he's only 27 and can help out on the 2nd power play unit should the Leafs endure any injury issues. As Treliving said previously, you can never have too many defensemen.
If Treliving thinks the Leafs need more depth and doesn't see Conor Timmins in his plans for this season, a bottom pairing defensemen with Kylington's skill set is worth considering. Especially a player Treliving already knows.
