The reigning Rocket Richard Trophy winner has been uncharacteristically quiet in the goals column to begin the season, but Tuesday's announcement that Matthews has been dealing with an upper-body injury could explain why his start hasn't been as hot as expected.
Through 13 games thus far, Matthews has lit the lamp just 5 times, good for a share of 3rd in team goal scoring, behind William Nylander and Matthew Knies. His 11 points are also 3rd on the team, along with John Tavares. These are still respectable numbers, but nowhere near the level of expectation of a player earning $13.25M, which is a pretty good indicator that whatever is ailing him is also preventing him from playing to the top of his potential.
Following Tuesday's practice, Leafs bench boss Craig Berube told reporters in Toronto that Matthews' injury is something that has been "lingering", confirming that Matthews has struggled with it for some time. Berube also confirmed that the injury is completely unrelated to the wrist issue Matthews endured a few short seasons ago.
To hear that it's not related to Matthews' previous wrist injury is a relief, but without any real answers as to what the ailment is and if it might be something that's impacting his shot mechanics, the concerns will remain present.
Matthews' next opportunity to get back into game action will be on Friday when the Leafs take on the Detroit Red Wings. If Matthews is not cleared to return on Friday, the Leafs' following game will take place on Saturday against the Montreal Canadiens in the 3rd game of a 4-game homestand against Atlantic Division rivals. The Leafs will also host the Ottawa Senators on November 12th to complete the homestand.
