While the NHL has "strict" rules on what it considers to be tampering, there's nothing to stop the players themselves from talking all they like to past teammates and competitors. It's easy to forget that even at the highest level, many of these players know each other and grew up together.
According to Nashville Predators forward Ryan O'Reilly, his teammate (and much loved former Leafs defenseman) Luke Schenn is a very well-connected man. As it turns out, Schenn broke the Steven Stamkos to Nashville news before any of the conventional insiders were reporting on it.
During his time in Toronto, Schenn was known as the "human eraser" due to his penchant for wiping out opposing forwards along the boards. Now he's known as "Scoops", according to O'Reilly. It'd be great to hear what else he knows.
Perhaps there's already a spot for him as a sports anchor and NHL Insider when he decides to hang up the skates. It's a common thing with former players to get into sports media at the end of their playing careers and I can say with confidence that people will tend to trust a connected former NHLer as a reliable source of information more than someone who obtains their information from a 3rd party source.
