"Unless there are some major changes over the final two months of the regular season, it certainly appears that the Toronto Maple Leafs will be playing the Boston Bruins in the opening round of the Stanley Cup playoffs this April.
With the way these two teams have been playing of late, the Maple Leafs could use a boost to their lineup to get them past their old rivals and have a legit shot at coming out of the Eastern Conference this year.
Howard Berger wrote that he received a phone call on Friday from a media member in Ottawa and he told him that the Maple Leafs could have a shot at acquiring two-time Norris Trophy winning defenseman Erik Karlsson before the February 26 trade deadline.
Berger's source told him there is «little chance» that owner Eugene Melnyk will give him a huge long-term extension. He went on to say that if the Leafs offer up a package that includes Mitch Marner, Travis Dermott with another mid-ranger prospect and/or a draft pick and Senators general manager Pierre Dorion «would listen.»
That is a high price to pay, but Karlsson would be an amazing edition to this Leafs roster. Would you pull the trigger on this deal?"
