There will be continuous talk about a potential Marner trade until a decision is made about his future. I'm sure we all know and expect this.
There are obviously a ton of suitors or teams that would like to acquire the perennial 90+ point forward, but as we all know, he holds final say with his no-movement clause.
The New York Islanders aren't on any "inside" reporter's radar as a team that could land Marner, but Islanders' reporter David Kolb believes Marner would be an ideal fit with Matthew Barzal.
To acquire Marner, Kolb presented a package built around one of Ryan Pulock or Adam Pelech and a handful of draft picks.
Obviously, there is zero chance the Leafs and Brad Treliving trade Marner for a defenseman and a handful of futures, unless that defenseman was Noah Dobson. Even then, it would be unlikely. The Leafs are in win now mode and while adding one of Pelech or Pulock would improve the blueline, but the package of one of these defensemen along with draft picks simply wouldn't be enough of a return to excite the Leafs.
The only way a deal like that would work is if it turned into a three-team deal where the Leafs acquired another roster player from a third team for the picks they would have gotten from the Islanders. That, however, complicates things even more.
Kolb pointed out that Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello likes to make "hockey trades", but this just isn't one of them and it would take a whole lot more to get Marner to Long Island.
