The Leafs have $19.7M in cap space as of now heading into July first when free agency begins. The leafs have expressed interest and have had talks with both Max Domi and Tyler Bertuzzi about returning which would eat almost half of their cap space. On top of that, they have a number of RFAs they need to decide what to do with as well as rebuild their blueline and find another goaltender to replace the up-and-down Ilya Samsonov and oft-injured Matt Murray.
Multiple people have already reported the Leafs have significant interest in the 31-year-old and according to The Athletic's James Mirtle, the feeling is mutual.
Brossoit was stellar for the Jets this past season, posting a 15-5-2 record through 23 games and a .927 save percentage. The BC native has appeared in 141 career games posting a 2.63GAA, .911 save percentage and a 64-46-13 record. Evolving Hockey projects a mid-term deal for Brossoit with a cap hit that would cost less than Samsonov did this past season at 3 years and $3.29M per season. With a number of holes to fill throughout the roster, Leafs GM Brad Treliving will have to be diligent and patient as to not overpay by any significant amount when free agency opens.
